JAPANESE SHOTOKAN KARATE

A TRADITIONAL KARATE

About Shotokan

Gichin Funakoshi, known as the founder of modern karate, was a professor at the Okinawa Teacher's College and President of the Okinawa Association of Martial Arts. In 1921, he was invited to put on a demonstration at the Japanese Ministry of Education. The demonstration turned out to be a great success. In 1922 he was asked to teach in their Universities and military. In 1936 Funakoshi established Shotokan, a great landmark in the history of karate.
